Hurricane Preparation Checklist
- Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest weather forecasts and hurricane warnings issued by local authorities. Stay tuned to trusted news sources for reliable information.
- Create an Emergency Plan: Develop a detailed emergency plan for yourself and your family members. Include evacuation routes, meeting points, and contact information for local emergency services.
- Secure Important Documents: Gather and safeguard important documents such as identification papers, insurance policies, and property deeds. Keep them in a waterproof and portable container.
- Review Insurance Coverage: Ensure that your insurance coverage, including homeowners or renters insurance, adequately protects your property and belongings in the event of a hurricane. Consider adding flood insurance as well, as it may not be included in standard policies.
- Secure Outdoor Objects: Secure or store outdoor furniture, potted plants, and other objects that could become projectiles in strong winds.
- Windows and Doors: If applicable, install storm shutters to protect against flying debris and strong winds.
- Stock Up on Emergency Supplies: Prepare an emergency supply kit that includes essential items such as non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, medication, a battery-powered radio, and a portable phone charger. Aim for supplies to last at least three days.
- Fuel and Maintenance for Vehicles: Fill up your vehicles’ gas tanks well in advance of the hurricane. Perform necessary maintenance to ensure they are in good working condition. Keep a spare tire, tools, and emergency supplies in the car.
- Use Portable Generators Safely: If using a portable generator, follow all safety precautions and guidelines. Place the generator in a well-ventilated area outdoors, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Secure Important Electronics: Safeguard valuable electronics by unplugging them before the storm arrives. Use surge protectors to prevent damage from power surges when reconnecting after the storm.
- Evacuation Planning: If local authorities issue an evacuation order, follow their instructions promptly. Plan for alternative accommodations in a safe location away from the storm’s path, and inform family members and friends of your whereabouts.
- Post Storm Inspection: Please be aware that the inspection of the interior of your unit is your responsibility. Please place your property watch person, family member, friend etc. on notice to inspect your unit after the storm has passed and report their findings directly to you. If you experience interior damage, please contact your insurance agent and file an insurance claim.
Remember, this checklist provides a general guideline, and you should always follow the instructions and recommendations provided by local authorities and emergency management agencies. Stay safe and be prepared!
